Lagos, Portugal was one of those places Raun and I didn’t just like. We were genuinely blown away. Tucked along the Algarve coast in southern Portugal, Lagos is where dramatic golden cliffs meet bright turquoise water, and every turn seems to come with another “wait… look at this” moment. It has that rare mix of historic charm and natural beauty that makes you want to slow down, stay longer, and start planning your return before you’ve even left.
If you’re searching for the best Algarve beaches and postcard-worthy coastline, Lagos delivers.
Lagos, Portugal
Lagos sits on the western side of the Algarve, and it’s an easy add-on if you’re flying into Faro Airport. It’s about an hour away by car, and once you arrive, you’ll quickly realize you don’t need to overcomplicate anything. Lagos is very walkable, especially around the center, and if you need a lift, Uber, Bolt, and taxis are all available.
The cliffs and beaches that made us stop in our tracks
The coastline around Lagos is the kind you remember. The cliffs are warm and rugged, shaped by wind and waves, and the beaches feel almost unreal: clear water, hidden coves, and those rock formations the Algarve is famous for.
Ponta da Piedade
If you do one iconic “Lagos” thing, make it Ponta da Piedade. The views are stunning: towering cliffs, natural arches, and water that shifts between deep blue and bright green depending on the light. It’s one of those places where you take a photo… and then immediately take ten more.
You’ll also notice something else here: hikers. We ran into quite a few people walking the coastal paths, and it made total sense. Lagos is perfect for anyone who loves a scenic walk with a payoff.
Praia do Camilo
Praia do Camilo was another standout for us: beautiful, tucked into the cliffs, and reached by a long staircase that makes the view feel earned in the best way. I can’t remember the exact number of steps (I just remember that you definitely feel them on the way back up ), but once you’re down there, it’s absolutely worth it.
Old Town Lagos: history, charm, and easy wandering
What we loved about Lagos is that it isn’t only beaches. Old Town Lagos has personality: cobblestone streets, little shops, outdoor cafés, and that relaxed Algarve rhythm. It’s the kind of place where you can wander without a strict plan, stumble into a pretty square, and somehow end up lingering over a meal longer than expected.
Lagos really does balance history and charm with the natural beauty surrounding it, and that’s what makes it feel more than “just a beach town.”
Getting around Lagos
One of the best parts: once you’re there, you can keep it simple.
- Walkable town center: easy to explore on foot
- Uber / Bolt / taxis: available when you want to hop to beaches or viewpoints
- Coastal paths: great for scenic walks and casual hikes
It’s the kind of place where you can do a lot without feeling like you’re constantly “in transit.”
Best time to visit Lagos, Portugal
If you’re looking for the sweet spot, April–May and September–October are fantastic times to visit. The weather is still beautiful, but it’s generally more comfortable and less crowded than peak summer.
Summer in Lagos is lively, but it’s also very busy and can be very hot, and since Lagos is a popular tourist destination, you’ll definitely feel the crowds during the high season.
Final thoughts
Lagos is one of those places that stays with you: those cliff views, that bright water, the mix of easy town life and jaw-dropping coastline. Raun and I left already knowing we want to go back, and honestly, it’s high on our “return trip” list.
If you’ve been to Lagos, Portugal, I’d love to know: which beach or viewpoint stole your heart? And if you haven’t been yet… put it on your list. The Algarve has a way of turning a simple trip into something unforgettable.
