January 25, 2026

January is the perfect time to get ahead on your travel goals and avoid some of the usual stress. Travel smarter in 2026: Our personal tips for stress-free adventures come from our own planning rituals and a gentle reminder that not everything always goes as planned. I had every intention of posting this right after the holidays, but life had other ideas. A couple of unexpected spills (on the same leg, no less!) sent me into recovery mode with a lot of ice packs and bed rest. Thankfully, nothing was broken, and Raun stepped up big time.

While I wasn’t moving much physically, it gave us both time to pause, reflect, and start mapping out our 2026 travels from the couch. And that’s the beauty of early planning: it lets you enjoy the journey long before you board the plane.

Travel Smarter in 2026: Our Personal Tips for Stress-Free Adventures

This month, we’re already booking our Aruba trip.  A time to relax and reset. We’re also working on my birthday trip, which will take us to three different countries. It’s exciting, but we know from experience how important it is to plan early, especially when you’re traveling during peak seasons. Flights, hotels, and even restaurants book up fast.

Whether you’re heading overseas or staying a little closer to home, a bit of planning now can make a world of difference later. Here are a few things we keep in mind while mapping out our travels:

Start With a Rough Timeline

Even if you don’t have exact dates, map out which months might work best for your travel. Consider school schedules, work obligations, or family events so you can avoid last-minute conflicts.

Be Strategic About Peak Season

Summer is peak season in many destinations, especially in Europe and beach spots. Flights and hotels book up fast and prices rise just as quickly. If summer is your only window to travel, start now. Booking early can save you money, time, and stress.

Don’t Forget Trains

Trains are an amazing way to get around in Europe, but they can be pricey if you book late. If your itinerary involves rail travel, look into advance tickets or passes that make it easier to move between cities.

Look Into Restaurant Reservations

If there’s a spot you know you want to try, especially in cities like Paris, Rome, or even right here in the States—see if they take early reservations. Some places open up bookings months in advance, and the good ones fill up fast.

Create a Flexible Budget

Costs can shift quickly when you’re planning travel. Give yourself a buffer. Budget for the flight and hotel, but also for the little extras: like tours, transit passes, or spontaneous detours. That flexibility helps you say yes to the moments that matter.

Use a Shared Travel Calendar

We like to use a shared digital calendar for our trips. It’s a great way to keep track of flights, train times, reservations, and anything else that helps the trip flow smoothly, without having to dig through emails every time.

Leave Room for the Unexpected

Not everything needs to be planned. Some of our best travel memories came from the unplanned: a neighborhood we wandered into, a café we found by chance, or an extra day we added just because we weren’t ready to leave.

Final Thought

Planning now sets you up to enjoy your trip later. You’ll arrive more relaxed, with a clearer sense of what’s ahead, and more space to be present. Whether you’re traveling far or staying closer to home, the goal is the same: to savor the adventure.

Let us know if you are planning something for 2026? We’d love to hear what’s on your travel list.

So sorry to hear of your spills but so glad bed rest and Raun being there for you put you right back up and running!! ☺️
I have a very interesting trip coming up next month! I’m heading for Tanzania – joining a service group to tutor young people for a national test they must take for future employment! A little adventure after two weeks of tutoring will follow! Needless to say, I’ll have stories for you next time I see you!!
