Fall in Love with Shoulder Season: The Sweet Spot for Travel is that magical time between peak tourist months and the off-season. For many summer hotspots, this means September and October. In Europe, shoulder season can also include May and early June. In the U.S., March, April, and October offer similar benefits. Traveling during shoulder season means shorter lines, open attractions, pleasant weather, smaller crowds, and often better hotel and airfare deals. It’s the sweet spot for travelers looking for a more relaxed, authentic experience without the rush of peak season.
Fall in Love with Shoulder Season: The Sweet Spot for Travel
Raun and I love traveling in September and October. The crowds are smaller, the weather is pleasant, and hotel and airfare prices are more budget-friendly. It allows us to truly enjoy destinations at a slower pace. We can spend a morning wandering quiet streets in Europe, linger over lunch at a sunlit café, or relax on a nearly empty beach in Lagos, Portugal. Shoulder season gives us the space to savor each moment—without feeling rushed or crowded.
Planning Your Adventure
Shoulder season is perfect for both spontaneous trips and well-planned getaways. Flights are generally cheaper, hotels offer discounted rates, and popular restaurants are easier to book. For us, the slower pace lets us explore the local culture more deeply. Whether it’s strolling through historic neighborhoods, enjoying outdoor cafés, or watching a sunset on a quiet beach, the experience feels more personal and relaxed. Regions to Consider
- Europe: Southern Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece are ideal in September and October. The summer heat fades, but the weather is still pleasant.
- U.S. Destinations: Coastal towns, national parks, and big cities like New York and Chicago are easier to navigate in the shoulder season.
- Tropical Spots: Be mindful of hurricane season. Caribbean islands in June through November may be risky, so plan accordingly or consider Central America, Aruba or Hawaii for safer options.
Tips for Traveling in Shoulder Season
- Book flexible accommodations: Many hotels offer lower rates and more flexible check-in/check-out during shoulder season. Book hotels and flights early to lock in deals.
- Check the weather carefully: Some destinations may have unexpected rain or wind. Hurricane season runs from June to the end of November in certain Caribbean regions, so plan accordingly. Check the local weather and daylight hours for your destination.
- Research seasonal activities and events: Shoulder season lets you enjoy local markets, cultural events, and restaurants without long waits.
- Some attractions may close early in the off-season.
- Consider travel insurance: Weather delays or unexpected changes are easier to handle when you’re insured.
- Pack layers: Layered clothing allows you to enjoy sunny afternoons and cooler evenings comfortably.
- Arrive early at popular attractions: You’ll still enjoy a crowd-free experience by visiting first thing in the morning.
Our Personal Experience
Raun and I treasure shoulder season trips because they feel less rushed and more meaningful. In September, we’ve watched sunrises over empty beaches, discovered quiet morning markets, and lingered in cafés simply enjoying the pace of life around us. These are the moments that make travel feel personal, memorable, and rejuvenating.
Traveling during the shoulder season is more than just a smart choice—it’s an invitation to slow down, savor each destination, and truly experience the heart of a place. For us, it’s become the preferred way to see the world.
