Atlantic City, just a short drive from our doorstep, is the perfect weekend escape when you’re craving a quick adventure without the hassle of long travel, which is why we chose it for our Atlantic City Weekend Escape: A Birthday Getaway Close to Home. This recent trip was extra special—it was my birthday weekend, and while we’re not big gamblers, Atlantic City offers so much more than just the casinos. From mouthwatering restaurants to must-see local attractions, our weekend was filled with unforgettable meals, art, history, and stunning views. If you’re seeking a quick getaway with fantastic food and memorable experiences, Atlantic City should definitely be on your list!
Atlantic City Weekend Escape: A Birthday Getaway Close to Home
Restaurant #1: Dock's Oyster House
Our first stop was Dock’s Oyster House, a local favorite since 1897. This historic gem has been serving fresh seafood for generations. It exudes a charming atmosphere that’s classy yet comfortably unpretentious. We were greeted with warmth as soon as we walked in. The decor perfectly blends old-world elegance with modern comfort.
The servers were excellent—attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. It made our experience even more enjoyable. We started with Steamed Clams and Clams Casino, both bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. For the main course, I had the Pan Sautéed Crabcakes. They were crispy on the outside and delightfully tender inside. Raun opted for the Dock’s Seafood Fry, a satisfying platter with shrimp, flounder, and a crab cake, all served with crispy French fries. Every bite reminded us why Dock’s is such a beloved spot.
For dessert, I enjoyed their famous Key Lime Pie—perfectly tart and creamy. Raun savored the Apple Crisp with vanilla gelato, a cozy, sweet ending to an amazing meal. Dock’s Oyster House is the kind of place that will have you looking forward to your next visit.
TIP: Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends. Dock’s gets busy! If you want to enjoy Happy Hour (4-6 PM), arrive early to snag a seat, as there’s often a line.
Restaurant #2: Kelcey’s Atlantic City
For our second culinary adventure, we visited Kelcey’s Atlantic City, a lively spot with a casual, vibrant atmosphere. Known for its Southern-style comfort dishes and generous portions, Kelcey’s immediately makes you feel at home.
We began with the Steamed Clams. The sauce was incredible—so flavorful that Raun and I joked we could have eaten it with garlic bread and called it a day. The Cornbread was baked to perfection: warm, soft, and heavenly with whipped butter.
For the main course, I chose the Steamed Whole Red Snapper, bone-in. While some might find the bones off-putting, I’m used to deboning fish, so it wasn’t an issue. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the sides were a perfect match. I had Mac and Cheese, rich and creamy, and Jasmine Rice with Gravy, which was just the right amount of seasoned goodness for my dietary needs.
Raun selected the Pork Chops Smothered in Gravy and Onions. The dish was hearty and flavorful. His sides included Collard Greens, tender and packed with flavor, and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, a comforting classic. Both meals were outstanding, leaving us fully satisfied.
Though we were too full for dessert, the rich, comforting flavors throughout the meal made this stop unforgettable.
TIP: Like Dock’s, reservations are a good idea, especially during peak times. Kelcey’s Happy Hour runs from 4-6 PM—perfect for enjoying a drink in the relaxed, fun atmosphere. Remember, Kelcey’s is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your visit accordingly.
The Noyes Art Garage and The African Heritage American Museum of Southern NJ
Our next stop was The Noyes Art Garage and The African American Museum, both housed within the same building. This was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, exploring the rich history and local art that Atlantic City has to offer. Both are open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 AM – 6 PM and are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The Noyes Art Garage
The Noyes Art Garage is a vibrant hub for local creativity. It showcases a diverse collection of artwork, from contemporary pieces to traditional crafts. As we explored the galleries, we were captivated by the unique works on display. Each piece offered a fresh perspective on the artist’s vision. The space itself is open and inviting, allowing the art to truly shine.
The Art Garage isn’t just a place to admire stunning art. It’s also a great spot to purchase one-of-a-kind pieces that capture the essence of the area. Many of the artworks are by students from Stockton University. We were blown away by the incredible talent on display. The creativity of these students is inspiring! The Art Garage also has a gift shop, where you can find unique, locally-made items. These make perfect souvenirs or gifts.
The African American Heritage Museum of Southern NJ
The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey is located within the same building. The museum offers an in-depth look at the city’s rich African American history. Although it’s small, it’s packed with history and culture. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in the stories that shaped Atlantic City.
We had the pleasure of receiving a guided tour from Dena. She walked us through various exhibits and interactive displays. These sheds light on the profound contributions of African Americans to the city’s culture, economy, and history.
A highlight of our visit was meeting Mr. Ralph Hunter, Sr., the museum’s founder. At 87 years young, Mr. Hunter is an inspiring individual. His passion for preserving African American heritage is evident in everything he does. We spent about 30 minutes speaking with him. He’s the kind of person you could talk to for hours, with a wealth of knowledge and personal stories to share.
This visit was insightful and enriching. I highly recommend the museum to anyone looking to understand Atlantic City’s diverse and vibrant heritage.
Climbing the Absecon Lighthouse
For a mix of history and outdoor adventure, we couldn’t miss a visit to the Absecon Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States. Built in 1857, it was originally constructed to help guide ships along the New Jersey coastline. Standing at 171 feet tall, the lighthouse was an essential beacon for sailors navigating the dangerous waters off the coast, and it continues to be a historic landmark today.
The climb to the top is not for the faint of heart, but the panoramic views of the Atlantic City skyline and coastline are totally worth it. The climb was definitely a workout, and we did take a few breaks on the way up. But as we neared the top, the excitement grew. The view from the top was absolutely stunning—an unforgettable view of the city, the ocean, and the bay. It gave us a whole new perspective on Atlantic City. And while the climb might be a challenge, it’s a must-do for anyone who enjoys a bit of adventure
TIP: The lighthouse closes at 5 PM, so if you want to make it to the top and take in the panoramic views, arrive by 3 PM to get your ticket and to ensure you have enough time to climb the 228 steps and enjoy the view.
