One of the many things we love about Aruba travel is how every part of the experience invites you to slow down — and the food is no exception. Aruba Dining: From Local Flavor to Hidden Gems became a theme of this trip, as we found ourselves savoring more than just the meals. The island’s culinary scene reflects its warmth and diversity, full of bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and dishes that feel like stories waiting to be shared. From breezy beach cafés to elegant spots tucked under the stars, we had the pleasure of enjoying a variety of restaurants that made each evening feel special in its own way.
Aruba’s culinary history is shaped by a mix of Spanish, Dutch, African, and Asian influences — and that blend shines through in every dish. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, creative small plates, or something a little unexpected, this island offers it all. We’re sharing a few Aruba restaurants that truly stood out to us — and one speakeasy surprise, thanks to a fellow traveler who steered us there last year.
Aruba Dining: From Local Flavor to Hidden Gems
Wacky Wahoo’s: Where Local Seafood Shines
This casual gem was recommended by a frequent Aruba traveler who raved about its seafood — and she wasn’t wrong. Wacky Wahoo’s doesn’t take reservations, so we arrived early at 4:45 p.m. for their 5:30 opening and found ourselves tenth in line. Luckily, a server came out to take drink orders while we waited on the porch, setting a relaxed and friendly tone.
The vibe is low-key and inviting, with a menu that leans into Aruba’s fishing culture. We started with the grilled crab and corn quesadilla — it was packed with flavor. I had the grilled red snapper with blackened shrimp, while Raun went for the seafood linguine. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. I paired mine with a frozen mango margarita mocktail that hit all the right notes. Wacky Wahoo’s delivers on freshness, flavor, and heart — and I’m still thinking about that red snapper.
Azar Aruba: Elevated Flavors, Effortless Vibe
Azar is one of those places we always look forward to. It’s upscale casual with a modern vibe — just a short walk from the Hyatt Regency. The food is plated beautifully and the flavors never miss. Every bite feels intentional.
We started with the scallops, which were perfectly tender and full of flavor. For dinner, we both ordered the Chilean sea bass, and it did not disappoint. I sipped on a Nicole-Tini mocktail with passion fruit that was so refreshing. Reservations are definitely recommended — I booked ours two months in advance, and the restaurant was packed the night we visited.
Lima Bistro: Elegant Dining with a Caribbean Twist
Lima Bistro is the sister restaurant to Azar and is located downtown Oranjestad, about a 20-minute taxi ride from the Hyatt Regency. Tucked by the water, it’s got a chic, upscale vibe with consistently great service and food.
We began with scallops topped with crispy onions in a rich, flavorful sauce. Our main course was lobster sous vide with risotto, sweet peas, pumpkin, and a luscious bisque sauce. I had the Miraflores Mojito mocktail made with passion fruit — so good. To top it off, we were surprised with a beautifully plated homemade bread pudding that read “Happy Anniversary” in chocolate. It was such a sweet ending. Reservations are a must — the place was full when we left.
CAYA House: Cozy Courtyard Dining with Island Flair
CAYA House, another recommendation from that frequent Aruba traveler, is just a short walk from the Hyatt Regency. The restaurant offers a cozy courtyard setting that blends indoor and outdoor vibes. The service and meals were both excellent.
We kicked off with the Creole crab cakes topped with a mango and papaya relish — delicious. I had the duck, specially modified to meet my dietary needs, and it still packed incredible flavor. Raun had the chicken fricassee with fried capers, sweet potato cream, and sweet potato gnocchi. I tried the Shining Barrel mocktail made with tamarind, mango, and papaya — it was delightful. Dessert was the enyucado: a yucca-based treat filled with ganache, topped with coconut ice cream and guava pieces. It was unforgettable.
Wilhelmina: Dining in a Garden Oasis
Located in downtown Oranjestad, Wilhelmina is a fine dining gem about 20 minutes by taxi from the Hyatt Regency. We arrived a little early and were escorted into a dreamy garden setting that felt like a hidden oasis. This is fine dining at its best — elegant and refined, with service that’s attentive in all the right ways.
Right away, we noticed a small detail that set the tone: silverware placed individually with each course. It’s a small touch, but one that really stood out. Raun jokingly said, “This place better be good — I wore pants instead of shorts,” and let’s just say… it was totally worth wearing the pants.
We were greeted with a complimentary amuse bouche — smoked cauliflower soup. I’m not usually a fan of cauliflower, but this was a total game changer.
For starters, we both had the Wilhelmina ravioli — filled with braised short rib, foie gras, and mushrooms, served with baby spinach, roasted portobello, and parmesan. I ordered the snapper, which was perfectly cooked and plated with shrimp, sweet potato purée, cucumber curry chutney, and sweet pepper sauce. Raun had the chicken and mushroom dish with truffle mashed potatoes and Madeira sauce. Every bite was met with an “OMG” — from us and just about every table around us.
Dessert was just as memorable. Raun loved the citrusy Wilhelmina’s Cheesecake, while I had the lemon tart with limoncello ice cream — bright, smooth, and the perfect ending.
Reservations here are a must — book at least three months in advance. But trust us, it’s more than worth it.
Apotek Speakeasy: A Hidden Sip Worth the Search
Apotek was another tip from a fellow traveler — and we’re so glad we followed through. About 20 minutes from the Hyatt Regency by taxi, it’s a hidden gem with serious speakeasy vibes. After ringing the doorbell, we were greeted by the hostess who led inside to a cozy corner sofa reserved for our anniversary.
The mood is dark, moody, and filled with music. The theme plays off an old-school pharmacy, complete with a prescription list of drinks. I ordered the “Sex Appeal” — vanilla vodka, Aperol, lime, orange, and passion fruit — and it was incredible. Raun went with a classic Manhattan. Both drinks were perfectly made.
The hostess even gave us a tour through the hidden door. It was such a fun and memorable experience. Drinks are on the pricier side, but totally worth it. Make sure to book a reservation in advance!
Until Next Time: Aruba Dining Memories to Savor
Whether it was the tender scallops, the warm garden ambiance, or a surprise mocktail that wowed us, Aruba’s dining scene reminded us that great meals are about more than food — they’re about connection, discovery, and joy.
Every spot we visited had its own rhythm and flavor, from the casual charm of Wacky Wahoo’s to the upscale delight of Wilhelmina. And that’s what we love about Aruba — the variety, the quality, and the warmth you feel with every dish.
If you’re heading to Aruba, add a few of these places to your list. You won’t just eat well — you’ll savor the whole experience.
