One of our most memorable holiday seasons was spent traveling through Europe during Christmas and New Year — a journey through four incredible countries that became a magical and meaningful adventure. We made the decision to celebrate with family and friends living in Brussels, but instead of staying in one place, we traveled through nearby countries to experience the beauty, joy, and wonder of the season. A Magical Christmas and New Year Holiday Through Europe truly captures what this trip became: unforgettable, full of connection, and rich with moments we’ll carry with us always.
A Magical Christmas and New Year Holiday Through Europe
We left on December 19th and returned home on January 4th, carrying more than just souvenirs. We traveled through Belgium, Luxembourg, Finland, and Paris during the most magical time of year. There were cobblestone streets glowing with golden lights, snow falling softly around us, the laughter of friends around a dinner table, and the warmth of moments that reminded us what this season is really about.
Christmas Magic in Luxembourg: Markets, Lights, and Unforgettable Charm
After a bit of rest in Brussels, we headed out the next morning by train to Luxembourg and what a beautiful surprise it turned out to be! We spent two festive days exploring its Christmas markets and soaking in the vibrant holiday atmosphere.
Luxembourg City was absolutely alive with the spirit of the season. The Christmas market felt like something out of a holiday storybook. There were rows of charming vendor stalls selling handmade crafts, ornaments, gifts, and all kinds of seasonal delights. The scent of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and spiced treats filled the air.
Families and children laughed on vintage-style rides and carousels, and live music floated through the crisp winter air. Every corner seemed to glow with twinkling lights, and everywhere you turned, there was something to take in: joyful crowds, sparkling decorations, and an energy that was hard to describe. It was festive, fun, and full of heart.
It really did feel like a hidden gem of the holidays, and we were so glad we made the stop.
After two memorable days, a dear friend met us in Luxembourg and drove us back to Brussels. The drive itself was quiet and meaningful, soft music playing, heartfelt conversation, and the countryside of France and Belgium gently unfolding around us. It was one of those moments you don’t plan for, but remember forever.
Christmas in Finland: Slowing Down, Savoring More
From Brussels, we flew to Helsinki to begin the next chapter of our holiday adventure. Finland welcomed us with crisp air, quiet beauty, and a sense of calm that instantly shifted our pace. After exploring a bit of the capital, we made our way to Uusikaupunki, a small, charming seaside town, to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with family and friends.
This part of the trip wasn’t about sightseeing. It was about presence. Conversations lingered. We played with the kids, shared stories, and just allowed ourselves to be in the moment. The time felt generous —no rush, no schedule, just togetherness.
The Christmas Eve meal was a feast of both tradition and personal touches. Alongside a turkey, prepared for the holiday gathering, we were introduced to a variety of Finnish favorites: roasted salmon, smoked salmon, raw salmon with sour cream, glazed ham, sweet potato casserole (known as sweet potato box), pickled herring, beets, boiled potatoes, hearty rye bread, and mugs of warm, spiced glögi (Finnish mulled wine). Every bite told a story, and the flavors were as comforting as the company.
Gifts were opened after dinner, a tradition that brought even more laughter and warmth to the table. Though we graciously skipped the traditional sauna, the hospitality and connection we experienced more than made up for it.
Brussels & A Day Trip to Ghent
After returning to Brussels from Finland, we spent more time with family and close friends, one of whom took us on a day trip to the medieval town of Ghent. Wandering its cobbled streets, surrounded by gothic architecture and canal views, felt like stepping into a storybook. We explored the sights at a relaxed pace and enjoyed a light lunch in the heart of the city.
That evening, back in Brussels, we gathered with friends at Le Saint Georges for an unforgettable dinner filled with rich flavors, flowing wine, and conversation that carried late into the night. It was one of those evenings where time slows down and connection takes center stage.
A Season of Meaningful Moments
From the stillness and warmth of Christmas in Finland to heartfelt moments with loved ones in Brussels, this season was shaped by connection, reflection, and joy. A few days later, we boarded a train to Paris for the final stretch of our European holiday: six days in the City of Light, including a memorable New Year’s celebration.
Arriving in Paris
We arrived in Paris and settled into our hotel, taking a moment to unwind before heading out for the evening. Dinner was at Sphere, one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Their six-course tasting menu never disappoints: creative, exquisitely prepared, and full of bold, thoughtful flavors. You can truly taste the chef’s passion in every bite.
Reservations at Sphere are a must and should be made at least four to five months in advance, especially during the holidays. After a delicious and memorable meal, we made our way back to the hotel to rest up for the adventures that awaited us the next day.
Mont Saint-Michel: A Step Back in Time
The next morning in Paris, we set off on a private day trip to Mont Saint-Michel Abbey in Normandy, and it was truly unforgettable.
The drive through Normandy was peaceful and picturesque, a scenic route that unfolded like a painting. Along the way, we stopped in the charming town of Pontorson at La Baie Gourmandises, where we picked up some of the most incredible chocolates. From there, it was on to lunch at La Ferme Saint-Michel, a cozy farmhouse-turned-restaurant just minutes from the abbey.
Reaching Mont Saint-Michel felt like stepping into another time. The abbey’s medieval architecture, peaceful cloisters, and sweeping views of the bay were absolutely breathtaking. The climb to the top was no small feat. Multiple breaks were involved! But every step was worth it for the view and the feeling of standing in a place so full of history and beauty.
This iconic site truly lives up to its reputation. If you ever find yourself in Normandy, don’t miss the chance to visit Mont Saint-Michel. It’s an experience that stays with you, part wonder, part inspiration, and entirely unforgettable.
Holiday Magic on the Champs-Élysées
The following day, we had no set plans, just a relaxed morning walking near our hotel and soaking in the festive decorations that lined the streets. We stopped for a light lunch at a cozy café nearby and simply enjoyed the slower pace of the day.
That evening, we dined at one of our favorite Italian spots, Via Del Campo. The food was, as always, flavorful and comforting, and the service felt like coming home.
After dinner, we headed to the Champs-Élysées to experience the holiday lights, and it truly felt like stepping into a dream. The entire avenue shimmered with golden light, and every storefront was dressed in its holiday best, full of charm and sparkle. It was a beautiful sight from every angle. We found ourselves pausing often, just taking it all in.
Being there reminded us why Paris at Christmas is so unforgettable. It was a moment to savor — full of wonder, beauty, and joy.
New Year’s Eve in Paris: Wine, Jazz, and Moments to Savor
On New Year’s Eve Day, we took a wine- tasting class in Paris, and it ended up being one of our favorite memories. The wines and cheeses were incredible, but it was more than just flavor. Our instructor, a passionate sommelier, guided us through French regions, tasting techniques, and thoughtful pairings. It was fun, informative, and a beautiful way to experience French culture.
That evening, we spent time with family and a dear friend at Sunside/Sunset Jazz Club in the Marais district. The singer, Clémence de Tournemire, performed a heartfelt tribute to Nina Simone that was both captivating and soulful. She spoke in both French and English, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that felt intimate and unforgettable.
After the performance, we returned to our hotel where we watched fireworks light up the Paris sky. The Champs-Élysées and Eiffel Tower areas were too crowded, and transportation was limited, so we chose a quieter celebration. We ended the evening with a toast at the hotel bar, reflecting on the beauty of the day.
What made this New Year’s Eve so special was the simple fact that we were with people we love. Raun and I took a moment to pause and truly soak it all in, grateful to be in Paris, sharing this chapter with family and friends.
A Treasured Surprise and a Memorable Parisian Dinner
We spent New Year’s Day in Paris in the best way possible: with family and friends. A dear friend who’s a pilot surprised us with a two-day layover in the city. We were able to catch up over lunch at our hotel. It was one of those unexpected moments that stay with you, simple, heartfelt, and so meaningful. After lunch, he headed back to his hotel to rest before an early flight the next morning, but we were so grateful for the time together.
Later that evening, my family treated Raun and me to a special dinner at Brasserie Fouquet’s Paris on the Champs-Élysées. The food was incredible, the atmosphere felt festive, but what made it unforgettable was the company. We laughed, reminisced, and truly savored every bite. If you’re thinking of visiting, reservations are a must. It’s a classic Parisian experience worth planning ahead for.
Farewell Moments in Paris with Family and Friends
The next morning, we said goodbye to our family and friends as they took the train back to Brussels. It was such a special time together — sharing meals, laughter, and meaningful moments in one of the most magical cities in Europe. Watching them leave was bittersweet, but we felt incredibly grateful for the memories we created together during this unforgettable holiday season.
A Paris Baking Class and Notre-Dame: Sweet and Soulful Moments
That afternoon, Raun and I took part in a Paris baking class, and it turned out to be one of the most delightful highlights of our trip. We made four types of traditional French pastries: each one delicious, flaky, and full of flavor. It was fun, interactive, and such a special way to connect with the culture of Paris through food.
Afterward, we visited Notre-Dame Cathedral. Seeing it up close after the fire and witnessing its incredible restoration was deeply moving. Years ago, we had admired it in its original beauty, but this time, there was something even more powerful about standing there again. We took our time strolling around Île de la Cité, soaking in the history and quiet charm of this beautiful part of the city.
Saying Goodbye to Paris and Heading Home
The next day, we said goodbye to Paris and boarded our flight back to the States. As the plane lifted off, we found ourselves reflecting on what had truly been an unforgettable journey. Four countries, countless experiences, and a season filled with meaning, joy, and connection.
From cozy evenings in Brussels to a snow-covered Christmas in Finland, the charm of Luxembourg, and ringing in the New Year in Paris, every moment brought something special. It wasn’t just the places we saw, but the people we shared them with that made this European holiday so magical.
If Europe during the holidays isn’t already on your travel bucket list, consider this your sign to add it. The warmth, wonder, and beauty of the season come alive in ways that stay with you long after the decorations come down.
As we approach this year’s holiday season, we’re reminded again of what matters most: connection, presence, and making time to savor the moments.
