20 Essential Travel Tips

Essential Travel Tips Before You Go

  • Check Your Passport & Visas: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Research visa requirements for your destination.
  • Make Copies of Important Documents: Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, visa, itinerary, and insurance. Email a copy to yourself for easy access.
  • Inform Your Bank: Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid flagged transactions.
  • Research Local Customs: Understanding cultural norms (like tipping or dress codes) will help you blend in and show respect.
  • Learn Key Phrases: Memorize basic words like “hello,” “thank you,” and “help” in the local language. It goes a long way.
  • Purchase Travel Insurance: Protect yourself against unexpected cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.
  • Pack Light & Smart: Use packing cubes to save space. Stick to essentials and check the weather for your destination.  Air tags are a great way to track your luggage, so you know they arrive at your destination.

While Traveling

  • Arrive Early for Flights: Give yourself plenty of time for security checks, especially at unfamiliar airports.
  • Carry a Universal Adapter: A single adapter with multiple plugs will keep your devices charged no matter where you go.
  • Bring a Portable Charger: Keep your phone and electronics powered on the go.
  • Dress for Comfort: Choose practical and weather-appropriate outfits for your travels, especially on long-haul flights or train rides.
  • Keep Essentials in Your Carry-On: Always pack a change of clothes, medication, toiletries, and valuables in your carry-on. Also pack washcloths. Many European hotels don’t provide them.

Money Matters

Money Matters
  • Have Local Currency Ready: Exchange a small amount of cash before arriving for immediate expenses like taxis or snacks. Many banks and credit unions can exchange foreign currency, for example euros for US dollars.
  • Use ATMs Wisely: ATMs often have better exchange rates than currency counters found at airports but stick to machines inside banks for safety.
  • Budget for Unexpected Costs: Leave room in your budget for last-minute purchases or emergencies.

Staying Safe

Travel Safely
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Stay Connected: Use an international phone plan or a local SIM card to stay reachable and navigate with maps.
  • Know Emergency Numbers: Memorize the local equivalent of 911, save your embassy’s contact info and grab a business card of your hotel.
  • Secure Your Belongings: Use anti-theft bags or money belts and never leave items unattended.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, remove yourself from the situation. It’s better to be cautious.

By preparing thoughtfully and staying adaptable, you can make your travel stress-free and unforgettable.
